Lately, I’ve been writing about how we can reimagine leadership. I’ve explored what it means to lead in an AI-powered world and how mental wellness must shape the way we show up as leaders.

All of these conversations lead to one essential idea: the power of perspective.

Our leadership can only be as expansive as the way we see ourselves.

When we define leadership using someone else’s rules, we chase models that were never built with us in mind. We try to fit into molds instead of shaping new ones.

But when we lead from our own perspective, from the richness of our stories, cultures, lived experiences, and values, we stop performing leadership and start living it.

What Makes You Different Is What Makes You Needed

Not long ago, I came across a reflection prompt from the personal branding guru Carol Cox. It asked me to name one belief I hold that goes against the grain.

The answer surfaced quickly:

“I believe that leadership development, especially for diverse leaders, cannot rely on retrofitting people into outdated leadership models.”

That belief comes from a deeply personal place.

Earlier in my career, as a Latina woman navigating tech and executive spaces, I heard it over and over.

Tone it down. Adapt. Fit the mold.

For a while, I tried.

I played the part. I spoke the “right” language. I followed the rules.

But somewhere in that process, I lost something essential: my spark, my joy, my sense of belonging.

Everything shifted when I realized it wasn’t me that needed fixing. It was the mold.

That change altered the course of my leadership. I began leading not in spite of my identity but because of it. I stopped shrinking and started shaping.

And in that reshaping, I discovered something powerful. It wasn’t just for me but for others who also want to lead from a place of truth.

You don’t need a new role or a new title to be a powerful leader. Sometimes, you just need a new lens that reflects your truth.
