Recommended Reading: Empowered by Serena Sacks-Mandel

The path to leadership in the constantly changing world of tech is fraught with challenges, especially for women who are trying to carve out a space in an industry that wasn't originally designed with us in mind.

That’s why I was energized when I recently read Serena Sacks-Mandel's book, “Empowered: Frame Your Narrative. Own Your Power,” because it resonates deeply with the core mission of Tech & Thrive—to liberate and elevate technology professionals to heights of success previously deemed unreachable.

For those of us at Tech & Thrive, and for anyone in the tech field, Serena's journey underscores a critical message: The power of vulnerability in leadership.

When I think about the recurring themes I see among my executive leadership and technology life coaching clients, I see Serena's ability to harness personal challenges as a catalyst for professional growth as particularly inspiring.

Because the answers each of us are searching for—no matter our role in tech—are to the question of how we can transform obstacles into opportunities that better ourselves and foster a supportive inclusive culture within our teams and organizations.

What's more, Serena’s emphasis on applying your unique strengths as a team leader and culture builder serves as a crucial reminder. In a sector where conformity might seem like the easier path, standing strong in your authenticity and values isn't just brave—it’s necessary for meaningful change.

Lessons for EdTech Leaders

On top of these powerful lessons, “Empowered” was the perfect “back-to-school” read for me, because Serena’s story, rich with vulnerability and resilience, reflects a lot of the same feelings I had as a long-time EdTech CIO, facing the relentless pace of the academic calendar while managing personal challenges.

Her journey through life-threatening cancer while climbing the career ladder in tech provides not only inspiration but also practical takeaways for enduring and thriving throughout this new school year… especially in our dual roles at school and at home:

  • Set clear boundaries: Inspired by Serena's approach to setting limits for health and personal time, I urge you to define your professional and personal boundaries. This could mean specifying work hours to remain unplugged from school-related issues, safeguarding your space to recharge.
  • Empower through delegation: Much like Serena empowered her team, you can lighten your workload and enhance trust within your department by delegating effectively. This not only builds a resilient team but also aligns with our T.H.R.I.V.E. Operating System’s focus on nurturing leadership capacities.
  • Prioritize self-care: Serena’s resilience highlights the importance of self-care, particularly within the relentless pace of our industry. Schedule regular mental health breaks and engage in activities that rejuvenate your spirit and body.
  • Cultivate a support network: Just as Serena relied on a network of colleagues and loved ones, professionals juggling caregiving and educational roles need a robust support system. Whether it’s through professional mentorship or personal support groups, having others to lean on can provide emotional and practical assistance.
  • Reflect and adjust: Adopt a habit of regular reflection on what works and what doesn’t in managing your dual responsibilities. Adjust your strategies as needed, much like how Serena adapted her approach throughout her career and personal life challenges.
  • Communicate openly: Reflecting Serena’s transparency about her struggles, maintain open communication with your peers and supervisors. This fosters a supportive work environment and helps in mutual understanding and assistance.
  • Celebrate every victory: Remember to celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Acknowledging your successes fosters a positive mindset and bolsters your resilience.

I see these as actionable lessons for education technology leaders, and particularly for women in tech, because they nurture a culture of empathy and support for ourselves and the people around us.

This school year, I challenge you to redefine how you support yourself and each other in our intertwined professional and personal lives.

Final Takeaway

For everyone walking the tightrope of professional ambition while tackling personal trials, remember: Resilience is a muscle, and each challenge is an opportunity to strengthen it.

Let's use Serene's inspired message to move forward not just with ambition in mind but with personal fulfillment and impact.
